Timing belt a tooth off ?

Would dirving my car with the timing belt one tooth off damage anything?

I know that the people in Phoenix were especially careful to get everything line up right
and the car had power and didn't over heat after that timing belt job.

My husband didn't think it hurt anything, but I am wondering if it can bend anything in the 
engine if things aren't line up just right???

I suppose that it didn't do it any good.
