quick distributor question

True or not:

If the engine is set at TDC with the "0" where it should be, is there one 
unique position for the distributor housing?

My thought is that as long as the rotor is pointing at the mark on the 
housing, the exact position of the distributor is not critical.

Source of the question: I just changed my dizzy last week.  Managed to put 
it in the exact location as original (on second try) and it works great, 
but now wondering if it was necessary.
