Jonathan,

Before you do any major tear down, try using a 3 foot
piece of plastic tubing or hose to try to isolate the
sound. Put one end to your ear and use the other to
search around for the sound. I had a similar sound
that I isolated to the point where the v-belt goes on
the pulley for the power steering. The pulley was only
slightly misaligned. You can seriously pinpoint a
noise to about a quarter inch this way.
