Hello Fay,

I would say very realiable.

I wouldn't get the sycro unless you really want or need a all wheel drive. 
They have a few expensive bits that tend to fail and there were not allot of 
them made so drive train pieces might be hard to find.

The '85 sounds allright 110k is fairly low mileage, I suppose that might be 
a replacement/ rebuilt motor. 

The original motors had head gasket issues that caused corrosion to the 
heads, most vanagons of that vintage have had one or both heads replaced. I 
would inquire if that had been dealt with. http://www.vanagon.com has allot 
of good info.

I would consider a Eurovan especially if you are going to be hauling stuff, 
being front engine and drive opens the back up, unlike the vanagons with the 
big hump covering the engine. The Eurovan has the five cylinder as well and 
being later model you can usually find one with AC.
