Thanks dave, that explains it. The picture of the differential in the
article linked to in the original post was of the current type, not the
"next generation" one. I went to the Torsen web site and downloaded the
PDF file but I still can't say as I see how it works. Further study may
be required.
I did find out that I can get a current generation quattro torsen diff
for $360 dollars, assuming that I can convince Torsen that it's for my
school's Formula SAE car and not the inside of my 016.
