Making a blink code decoder

Iain;

When I made a blink code reader for my '91 200q I stuck a LED in the cap of
a defunct ballpoint pen and ran the wires out the open end. I used the LED
to limit the current drawn through the ECU. From what I recall I triggered
it by shorting the appropriate contacts in the connector block under the
dash.

I am trying to make myself a blink code decoder, would a 12v car bulb work
plugged into the diagnostic sockets???? if so what's the procedure to get it
to blink.

Thanks

Iain
