Kent, all here is true except for the bit about the diffs. The A8 uses a
Torsen center diff with EDL at front and rear. the V8 uses torsen center,
hasn't got EDL at all (although the rear isn't much apart from it I guess),
and a purely open front diff IIRC. I had a '90 V8, and I actually loved it,
although it wasn't cheap to keep. Driven plenty of A8's, A8L's and S8's
during my stint as an Audi Brand Specialist. Loved them too, although I
gotta say the LWB car is a bit much unless you really need it. It's surely
not the 'sporty' car of the bunch, although it handles remarkably well for a
car of both its length and weight. That said, I think I'd opt out of the 97
A8, for the reasons you mentioned, especially the lack of tip, although i
didn't realize it was that easy to add tip to the 97. I personally prefer
the updated fascia and interior of the 2000- models.
