PS on the PCV question

Just ran my ETKA (I love shareaza! lol) and it says that part number
035 103 245 D is a "restrictor for ventilation hose".
Guess I was right about it not being a valve (duh).
Maybe I should set my sights on the valve cover gasket then...?
Maybe I have a bad fuel pressure regulator...
Maybe I need to buy a car that's not 20 years old...
When the car studders and backfires, it reminds me of when I release
the safety lever on my lawn mower (which kills the engine) and pull it
back on right when the engine's about to die...
I guess the stalling comes from too much air getting in thru my
mysterious vacuum leak and essentially causes a fuel starvation
situation since there isn't enough gas in the cylinders to match all
the extra unmetered air, then backfires once there's a build up of gas
to match the unmetered air that's been sucked in through the leak?
I promise I'm done now :)
Looking forward to your input,
