Where is the oil temp sender?

The patient is my 2000 A6Q 2.8 (sorry, don't have the engine code).
My mechanic has given up. According to his manuals (not Bentley),
this car does not have an oil temp gauge. He has been unable to find
the sender at all, after two hours of searching then engine.
He did find an "oil level thermo sensor", but disconnecting it had
no effect on the oil temp readings on the dash.

Does anyone know where the (*!&@(!*&)!!#  this thing is?
