What kind of shape is the car in overall?  If the tranny is
truly dead, it might pay to spend the "budgeted" $1500 or so
on an '89 or '90 200.  You'd get the newer dash, dual-knock
sensor engine, and other upgrades. The old car can act as a
parts car to keep the new one going (assuming you have a
place to store it and the skills to swap parts).
