$38 of wishful thinking, 4th gear synchros. are toast

GL-4.  From the Bentley (and per many other recommendations here):

SPECIFICATION:  

Hypoid SAE 80W/90, Mil L-2105, API GL-4
or
Audi synthetic oil G50, SAE 75W/90, Mil L-2105, API GL-4

Thinking that perhaps the oil was changed out with the wrong type was one of the reasons I decided to refill with MT-90, but I now think the oil is not the culprit.  More likely in my case a factory-defective synchro., a doofus owner, or a badly-missed shift into 4th, or some combination of the three.
