Posessed Odometer

Hi all!
I'm very familiar with the failure mode of some Audi odometers where the
reset button has been pressed while moving, forcing a small plastic gear up
a steel shaft and rendering it inoperable. I'm experiencing somewhat of a
different failure mode on my 5ktq: the odometer seems to randomly choose
between a) stopped, b) normal operation and c) HYPER MODE (about 1.5x the
normal speed). It appears that the three modes are not connected to a
certain rpm, speed, CC voltage, CC fan setting, defrost setting, etc. I
understand that there's a little servo that advances the odometer along a
bit at a time - how does the servo get mode c to kick in?
Thanks for any advice,
Cheers!
