Like most things in life, it's buyer/user beware... In my case, when
selling my '95 Jetta in 2003, I took advantage of a free offer from Carfax
and ran my VIN, thinking I could provide this to a potential buyer...
Interestingly enough, my car came out as 'clean', even though it was
involved in an accident in November of 1997, which caused $13,000 worth of
damage ($5,000 of which was airbag replacement). After repair, the car was
fine - it was all sheetmetal and engine accessories, no unibody damage.
But I was surprised that Carfax didn't mention it.

I did disclose the accident to the buyer and gave them copies of the
repair bills. They bought the car.
