According to my Austrian friend, a LOT of mid-eighties German cars
had that "feature" (my '84 4KQ too). Apparently it was thought that
the cool fresh air at face level would help keep the driver awake, even
when heating the rest of the car. I simply closed my center vents,
draft problem solved.
Of course, my Austrian friend thinks that the "feature" is totally logical.
Go figure. (Funny how he doesn't miss the "feature" in his 2004.5 Passat,
nor his '93 100CSQA).
