You certainly do not have to pull the hub to swap strut inserts on your car.
You will need a spring compressor, though. Without being too elaborate,
or getting this in the right order (!), you undo the nut holding the top
of the strut under the hood, undo the axle nut (with tire on ground),
drop the ball joint out of the strut housing, and pop out the tie rod.
Now you have the strut housing/spring assembly off the car.
Compress the spring, undo the castle nut, pull out old parts (you'll
have to undo the big nasty {rusty?} strut cap thing), install new strut
cartridge, new strut bearing (a good idea), and put it all back together
again. No alignment necessary. Use NEW locknuts on all three things I
said to undo to remove the strut assembly.
