VAG-COM Questions

I'm got an '97 A8 and use Vagcom on it. My understanding is that the reminder for service counts down.
So when it hits 0 it trips the service light.
Mine only displays 1-15 each beeing 1000KM 
So 8 equals 8000KM or about 5000 miles
Some of the service reminders work on time and not millage.
I have found the list over at audiworld to be more helpfull for the newer cars
They even have a VAG-COM deticated list.
