Audi 5000S Quattro not charging

I should probably also mention, as it may be related, that for about
the past 2 weeks something sort of odd has been happening - When the
engine fan kicks on, if my clutch is NOT pushed in, the car squeals
really bad - but as soon as I push in the clutch, the squealing stops.
Again, this ONLY happens when the engine fan is running.
(obviously, since it only happens when the car is in gear, it makes it
really difficult to get out and see what is causing it).
