The blue wire supplies field current to the alternator. The voltage
regulator reacts to main positive post voltage change by either
allowing more or less current from the field wire into the system;
the field takes the place of permanent magnets, thus the magnetic
field is variable and stronger than it would be with (sufficiently
inexpensive and small enough) permanent magnets.
