I don't think it is a bad idea, just overkill.
The cable splice is a common problem. Check yours, and fix
it if needed.
The star adjuster nuts are available fairly cheaply, as they
are used on lots of VWs and Audis. I'd get new ones, just
because they will make life easier.
Are you loosening the AC bar, too? [1] Once all the fiddly
bits are loose, you can adjust the tension on the belt, then
tighten everything back up. Just make sure you have a metric
belt from Continental; otherwise, it will work itself off.
(I lost one in a snowstorm on the NJ GSP, 250 miles from
home, 600 miles to my destination.)
If you do all that, you shouldn't need a 2nd voltmeter.
But if it makes you feel better, go ahead.
