considering a 2000 or 2001 A4 Avant

Wow, bad day? I don't know you from Adam, and don't recall calling you an idiot. If you took offense to what I wrote, hey, I'm sorry. If you know how to drive as well as you claim, then you shouldn't have found my post offensive, because it probably doesn't apply to you, at least not in my opinion. If you'll kindly re-read my post, you'll discover that I didn't deny it (throttle lag) being there....
The easy way I've found around the throttle lag is to use the manual shift, specifically the buttons, to downshift before applying the throttle, and our car at least, has little to no trouble passing when I want to pass. That's with a family of 4, rear cargo area loaded, and an 18 cu.ft box on the roof loaded to the gills for a week's vacation. The car is a 99 1.8T Avant, Tiptronic, not chipped, to my knowlege anyway. Of course other's experiences may vary, so be it. It's an automatic, and a pretty decent one compared to other crap out there. Sure there are better, but there's a lot worse too.

Have a Nice Day!

It's not pulling out and then nailing the throttle, there is tons of throttle lag
even if you stomp on the gas to pull out.

If it were that easy, then this so-called "IDIOT" would not be complaining about it.
I know how to step on the gas, thank you.

As far as pickup/lag, it's there, but it's nothing that can't be
overcome with a little attention to throttle, and any idiot knows
better than to pull out to pass first THEN nail the throttle hoping to
go past the car in front of you before getting whacked. The turbo
helps the engine make good power at 2K rpm. It's also one of the
safest cars on the road, scoring higher than the comparable Volvos
(surprise, not really) in the class. With the wife and 2 kids in the
car daily, that outranks all out performance in my book.
