Starter "flat spot" - what's causing this?

I second that. The same thing happened to me. You can't really say a starter is good until you test it under the load of an engine. It may also be the solenoid. There are 2 possible problems with the solenoid. It may have bad windings or it could be something wrong with the geared mechanism that pushes the starter teeth towards the ring gear teeth. In either case you'll need a rebuild... any good rebuilder will look at the solenoid as well, so I'd be sure you're rebuilder is up to it or get one from a parts store, b/c at least there you can return it if it doesn't work. good luck.

I had a starter that "worked like a champ" when power was applied on the
bench, but couldn't muster any power to turn the engine over under load.
Before you reinstall it, I'd have someone check it under load.
