labor day Audi labor

What year is your car, Calvin? Cody's description applies to the fuel pump
mounting in the pre-'89 cars. In the later cars the fuel pump sits in a
basket that is twist-locked into a larger plastic bucket. The official way
to remove the pump is to turn the inner basket until it unlocks and lift it
out. There is a tool for this, but some of them turn by hand (the one on my
'91 200q wouldn't). An alternative method is to release the two tabs that
hold the pump in the inner basket and lift the pump out.

You have to determine which mounting system you have in your car - but then
you probably have the pump out by now :)

There are 3 rubber bushings that slide onto 3 plastic "spikes" more or less.
Each "spike" has a plastic clip. It's somewhat tricky since you can only get
one hand in the tank and must simultaneously undo 3 clips and pull on the
pump. Use one hand to undo the clips, and with the other pull on the fuel
line thats attached to the pump from outside the tank. The easiest way to
get all 3 clips is to get one then cock the pump sideways so that clip
doesn't re-engage, then do the other two. Once it free of the bottom getting
it though the hole in the top requires some finagling too, but that should
be easy to figure out.
