Thanks again to everyone who suggested solutions to this. I eventually
decided that if helicoils were as good as is claimed, that was the way
to go.

I'm very pleased with the results; I'd certainly recommend this approach.

Once I'd tracked down a helicoil kit for the fine-pitched thread and
bought an obscure drill bit of the critical diameter, the hardest part
was separating the brake disc and the hub, which had decided to rust
themselves together. Overall, a simple and effective solution.
