When presented with this problem, I found that a small piece of  
springy wire, (piano wire might work) bent into the right shape could  
replace the little keeper cap. I did have to slightly enlarge the  
groove in the rod end to give the wire a place to sit all the way  
around. Works fine, and is almost free.
