You need to find someone with a VAG-COM for VW/Audi
scan tool that can access the Top control module. The
hydraulic pump and solinoid are controlled
electronically and it is a fairly complex system. The
OBD system can tell you a lot about what is wrong and
you can even test some of the components.
Here is the description from the factory manuals:
OBD Capabilities:
Memory - Rapid data transfer
Data output - Rapid data transfer
Available Functions:
Check Control Module Versions
Check DTC Memory
Output Diagnostic Test Mode
Read Measuring Value Block
The convertible top control module -J256- can
differentiate between 35 different types of
malfunctions. Malfunctions are stored as Diagnostic
Trouble Codes (DTCs) in DTC memory and remain stored
until the memory is checked and then erased using the
VAG1551 scan tool.
NOTES:
- All of the available On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
capabilities can only be fully utilized by using the
VAG1551 scan tool.
- The On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program can be
initiated only with the engine not running and the
ignition switched on.
- If the convertible top control module -J256-
recognizes a malfunction during the movement of the
top, the hydraulic system is switched off and the
malfunction (Diagnostic Trouble Code or DTC) is
stored.
Input signals
The convertible top control module recognizes
"Undefined switch condition" (an incorrect switch has
been operated) and "Incorrect signal" (a switch has
not switched at the specified time). These
malfunctions are stored as static malfunctions. If the
malfunction does not occur again within a complete
opening and closing cycle of the convertible top, the
malfunction is designated "sporadic" and indicated by
"/SP" on the scan tool display. If the malfunction
does not occur again within 2 complete opening and
closing cycles, it is erased.
Good Luck
Jim
Output signals
The Convertible top control module recognizes a "Short
circuit to B+" and an "Open circuit." These
malfunctions are stored only as sporadic malfunctions,
but are never automatically erased.
