Why not just use a sidecutter to cut the hoses just off the end of the
nipple and then, when you get the cover free, you can cut the inch or so of
tube left on the nipple with a sharp blade used gently. There should be
enough slack in the hoses that they can be shortened a bit with no real
harm. I think the return line just lies free in the tank, so you really
don't have to cut that one off. I also seem to recall that there's
insufficient length of hose to the pump to let you get in there to remove
the pump too without having the cover out of the way.
