Thanks for the link to the story. I never said the stuff wasn't flammable,
and neither does ES. Obviously there is a risk involved, and I'll be
interested to see the next article in Cool Profit$ (I have no affiliation
with them.)
But all my hoses are in the right place and aren't leaking. And anyone can
tell you that there are a number of things under the hood of an Audi that
can cause a fire if they're not properly secured, etc. The fuel filter
comes to mind, as well as the fact that the fuel injectors have been known
to blow themselves out of the cylinder head under high enough boost. And
there are more than a few people on this list who have done things like
increasing boost with heavier wastegate springs, schrapnel knobs, etc.,
etc.
It's good to know, and I'll keep an eye on it, but it's not making me want
to switch back. Yet.
And while we're on the subject of spurious accidents, today I received a
delivery at my business of a big piece of equipment that arrived on a
53-foot semi. We unloaded it using the hydraulic lift at the rear of the
truck, and then while the operator was raising the lift, the switch
controlling it apparently shorted (it wasn't his trailer -- his usual
trailer was in the shop with an air brake problem, and this one had been
given to him at the last minute) and put the liftgate into "descend" with no
way to shut it off. Two great big hydraulic cylinders pushing it right into
the ground. He had to shut the truck off and wait for a specialist to jack
it back up and tie it back to drive away. Good thing my feet weren't under
there.
My point is that life is full of risks, but risks are manageable, and some
are acceptable. I don't recommend the refrigerant to anyone who hasn't read
the research, the FAQs, and decided for themselves how much risk they are
willing to assume.
