'91 audi 100 automatic tranny gear indicator

Hello- my audi dash says I'm in drive no matter what position the gearshift
selector is in.  The transmission goes into park and neutral, but will not
start. What is the most likely culprit? Is there a way to bypass this safety
feature? I've looked at the alarm wiring schematics that are on the web
which indicates that relay #8 is the starter relay and the ground for this
runs to the alarm module and the Transmission safety switch goes into the
alarm  However my model seems different as there is no relay #8 as I have
the 4 speed transmission.
 
Any tips would be appreciated.
