OK - That makes me feel better.

OK, That makes me feel even better!

Will check this. Question - Because I have been
experimenting with various replacement CIS parts from
my stockpile, I haven't tightened the clamp on either
end of the boot to allow frequent playing with the air
plate. If the boot is in place but not clamped, will
there be a large enough air leak so that system won't
work? Actually if this was true, then your cranking
test wouldn't work either.

OK, I've got to come clean here. This whole
mess started when I put in new plugs (NGK), cap/rotor
(Bosch OEM), and wires (Kingsborne). The car ran
fine before these new parts, hasn't started since.
Unknown to me at the time, somehow stupidly I put in
the wires so that the firing order was correct, but
only if the distributor rotated counterclock-wise!
I assumed that something in the CIS had coincidentally
gone wrong (because all the ign. parts were new and
therefore functional, AND I couldn't have done
anything wrong). As part of non-starting, the engine
was flooding - heavy fuel smell while cranking, and
very strange "feel" to the engine while cranking
(dealer said it was hydrolocking = strange feel),
further indicating to my fevered amateur mind that the
CIS had gone off. After many weeks of messing with
and testing various CIS components, I finally
discovered that the distrib rotated clockwise. That
fixed, the motor now spins easily and eagerly, no
heavy fuel smell, but won't start. I have replaced
all CIS components several times from my stock pile of
used parts but still no start. Although I have
assumed from the start that all the new ignition parts
actually worked, a creeping doubt has taken over me.
Your response further indicates to me that some
ignition part(s) (also put in new used coil) may be
the culprit.

These will be checked. If it acutally is
something this simple, I will nominate myself for the
Darwin Award for home automotive excellence. I hope
it is this simple, altho I will feel like
(...actually I would in fact be...) a complete idiot.
Thankfully, the internet is largely anonymous.
Thanks for the suggestions.
p.s. Altho the above confessional could have been
theraputic/cathartic, it wasn't - I still feel like an idiot!
