1991 100 auto won't crank

I don't recall. The dash-bound PRND321 doesn't light up, so I
look at the shifter itself. :)

My indicator has never lit up like a gauge that is back-lit.
Is that how it is supposed to work? Mine is more like a
black-on-grey LCD image, that needs just the right lighting
to see it. From the driver's seat, it is too hard to read at
a glance. I have to move my head around to catch the ambient
light just right to see it.
