I'd say that you'd do better hooking up a portable CD player to a  
cheap-o car amp and some home speakers or an auto "wedge" speaker.   
The cheap-o car amp would cost about as much as an inverter (it  
sounds like you don't own one already) and will likely play cleaner  
as cheap inverters output very dirty power that tends to cause all  
manner of junk to come out of an amplifier.  That's not to say it  
can't be done, it's just saying that I've had very mixed results with  
several amps and several inverters.  With a portable CD player  
(discman, etc), a car amp, and a reasonably efficient speaker I'd  
expect you to get a few hours out of a car battery.  Though, that  
kind of use is hard on car batteries.
