I generally agree.  You ought to get several hours at least out of a 
good well charged battery, though.  It will play until it is long past 
being able to start a car.

How about an mp3 player instead of a cd player?  This is the 21st 
century, after all, as they tell me.

Also, if you are obtaining speakers to do this, consider that the more 
efficient they are, the longer the system will play at a given volume 
level.  Music supply stores often have rental PA gear, those speakers 
tend to play very loud for given power input.  "Audiophile" level sound 
quality may not be there, but this doesn't sound like it's going to 
really matter, all you want is tunes.
