Going back to at least 1980 they used the primer-color-clear set up, as 
far as I know.

Not that there's much of it left on my '82 coupe.  On my 89 90Q, it only 
appears to be failing where the car was once reassembled after being 
squooshed.  Or vice versa, I suppose it depends on where the accident was.
