Yes, Welcome.  I'd bet a quid on it being broken wiring, too,
and being from the States, I don't even know what a quid is.

The only question is whether to solder or crimp the new
connections.  I've tried both, and found I'm better with
a good US$25 ratcheting crimper than I am with a US$10
soldering iron.
