**** Yup, thats the hood struts. Gas operated struts act like springs.

**** Struts act up when its cold. Cold air, less gas expansion > kaput
struts.
I also was using the "broom" technique during the summer. Winter came and
the lone working strut was not enough to keep hood up. Plus you needed two
ppl to pop the hood.
Two new struts later . .and all is well..
