Bittorrent is really for broadband connections, because it is
generally used on fairly large files.

The 'seeding' bit is what makes it practical to distribute large
files; everyone pitches in to send pieces to everyone else, and peers
who share the most are given preference by other peers (theory being
that a chunk of data does the most good being given to someone who is
sharing quite a bit back.) The BitTorrent metafile (.torrent)
contains information to verify each chunk to make sure you haven't
been given "bogus" data.

Sharing a 700MB file among 1000 people becomes a matter of uploading
~700MB data for the person sharing the file...instead of uploading
700x1000MB. It is particularly effective if you combine it with a
little "sneakernet" (ie, handing off a copy to a friend via CD/DVD)
to provide more than one initial "seed".
