Odometer quit, electronic version in 89 100

I'm stuck here... I have the speedo in hand but cannot see how to get inside
to the gears. I'm afraid the 100/200/5000 speedo assembly is completely
different from the 4000/80/90. It appears I need to remove the needle and
face to get inside and it feels like I'm about to break something. There
doesn't seem to be a "cap" as described below by John. Gentle prying
doesn't do it for me.

Am I correct that I need to remove the needle to get inside? If so, how do
I get it off?
