May I interject that the "VR" is not usually what goes "bad."  It is 
simply that the brushes wear down, and either they need to be replaced 
or a new VR/brush assembly needs to be installed.  Most of the time, 
it's easier to just replace the whole assembly.

In Brett's case, it sounds like the transistor in the VR failed, rather 
then the 60k-odd brush weardown failure.
