Temp Gauge Reading Low

Hi folks

just need a little advice, the temp gauge on my coupe 20vq (early 1990 model) reads low like around a quarter, before i go replacing the thermostat can i test this in anyway. As pointer after i shut off the car the rad fan runs, surely if it was genuinely running cold the rad fan wouldn't operate as it's controlled by a different switch??? I presume the gauge sender is the one on the back of the head not the muilt function temp sender under the top hose.
