I'd second Brett's idea- a Volvo 850/S70/V70 turbo/T5/R is a good choice for
a powerful automatic european car.
Converting a 200q20v to automatic would be a large undertaking- modify the
transmission tunnel to accept an automatic; source either a V8q or euro-spec
UrS automatic transmission; either modify a V8 instrument cluster to read
properly with the I-5 or modify the existing cluster to show the gear
indication; modify the pedal box for two-pedals and seal up the clutch pedal
hole; etc.
IMHO, it's just not worth it. No way unless you have hundreds and hundreds
of hours of free time, a welder, metalforming equipment, etc. Turning it
into a FWD is even worse of an idea.
If you're concerned that turbo lag in something like the 1.8T is bad with an
automatic, you will be pleased with the 850- they're pretty good.
Brett's TDI idea is a good one as well- I wonder how the TDI cars drive with
an automatic?
