Lots of good suggestions here.  I would just stress documentation and
a clear definition of how you get paid.  i.e. milestones or per hours
worked.  Make sure you have a mechanism to deal with scope changes.

I know there is a web site for salaries by area.  Maybe salary.com. 
The rule of thumb I have used in the past is this.  Look up what you
would make based on your experience in your area for a year in a
salary position.  Then divide this number by 1000 to get your hourly
rate.  As a consultant you have to take care of your own insurance and
some activities such as collecting and marketing are unpaid efforts so
you have to cover yourself.  Historically my biggest mistake has been
selling myself too short by asking too little.
