The B5 Passat (a longitudinal 1.8T) indeed suffers from sludge problems...the A4 Golf and Jetta (transverse mount) does not. I had heard it not only has to do with the design of the oil pan (shallower plus less capacity) but also with the oil filter (again smaller, less capacity). The A platform 1.8T engines hold something on the line of 25% more oil...
