Personally,  I've always preferred to slice my own bread.   I worked at the
local state hospital (read mental institution) three decades ago,  when the
in-house bakery provided all sorts of delights including wonderful whole
loaves we could cut to personal specification.  Then they remodelled the
bakery, installed a bread slicer and soon after closed the whole operation
and began purchasing commercially sliced bread.  Whole place went downhill
steadily thereafter.
