Fresh from the post of 86 Coupe GT:
The crash is true, as I watched it happened. McNish wound up the car as he cruised in-between turns one and two, presumably to spin the tires as most of the cars were doing. The car immediately went sideways and locked up the rear wheels, doing a slow 270 and backing into the haybales around 10mph. It's hard to say how much damage was done, as the car was facing me at that point, and it's doubly hard, as those who know the car know that the starter of course comes out the rear - exactly where the hit was. Being that the car is 70 years old, and with our own 80 year old car at home, minor incidents can be very, very costly. I can't speculate as to the cause, as it may not be McNish's fault - something could very well have broken in either the transmission or differential, causing the locking wheels. Seemed a strange incident.
