That would seem to eliminate the cold start injector (they never go bad
anyway...

Get the whole distributor.

It does sound as if the air plate might be sticking.  Have you opened it 
up and checked it for general cleanliness?

Just remember that it is the ground that is switched, not the 12v 
connection (usually).

But I think the starting fluid has told you what you need to know - 
there isn't enough (or any) fuel when you are trying to start it.

Could the temp sender for the ECU be bad?  It might always "think" the 
engine is warm, so it isn't rich enough to start at first.
