There was a TSB w/ a retrofit- early 996s and Boxsters had no emergency
release at all.
Therefore, you _were_ most definitely screwed if the battery dies. Thus the
reason for the retrofit. Because this was not a recall per se, there is no
guarantee that any particular car has the retrofit.
I can scan the article in Excellence if you need further proof.
