Pressure warning switch on the hydraulic servo as the cause of the autocheck
light flashing?

In this case it could be a bad switch, or even a bad pump in the central
hydraulic system. As I recall there is a filter in one of the lines that
can get clogged if the fluid hasn't been changed out in a long time.
Also, how about a faulty warning switch on the brake fluid reservoir cap?
These are just off the top of my head, I hope they help. I can look up the
testing procedure for the pressure switch on the servo. in the Bentley.
That would neatly explain why you still have bomb function but a warning
light while the car is running. If the brake servo itself has gone south,
expect to spend at least $250. Ouch.
As far as the "sponginess" is concerned, I would do a full brake-fluid flush
and pressure bleed with nice, new clean brake fluid.
