If it was a SD1 (and being the only 4-door V8 hatch that Rover built it
sounds like it) then I think that they were fuel injected for the US market
long before they were offered that way in the UK - we had to put up with SU
carbs on the series 1 & 1a and then Solex carbs on the series 2 (unless you
could find a Vitesse or Vanden Plas EFi). There was a turbo diesel 2.4 litre
model, a 2 litre 4 cyl and 2.3 & 2.6 litre 6 pots too.
I owned a sequence of the V8 models - none (thank God) in the awful shade
you saw (Tumeric Yellow I think). For me, the biggest let-down was the
paint - whoever chose the colours and supplier should have been shot - the
colours were crap, and the quality of the finish was worse, you'd have to be
very lucky to find one with a good shine as the paint went flat within
months no matter how much polish you used. This then led to body shell
corrosion - front of the bonnet, rear of the tailgate and most especially
the small section between the rear wheel arch and the rear door.
The only electrical problem I ever suffered was a burned out light switch
(no relays in the light circuit on series 1 & 1a cars) - other than that I
found the cars really reliable even with minimal maintenance. It was with
deep regret that running costs and lack of cash forced me to sell my Series
2 3500SE when I got married and drive a number of less pleasant and less
reliable vehicles until I was able to afford my quattro.
