Nippondenso compressor AC clutch adjustment

My AC wasn't working on my 1991 90 Quattro 20V.  After troubleshooting
I determined there was voltage at the clutch but it wasn't pulling in. 


I undid the connector to the clutch to measure the coil resistance and
while the connector was apart I applied battery voltage directly to the
clutch to measure the current.  To my surprise, after a minute it
pulled in.  It has worked ever since.

I doubt that the serendipity will last however.  I am thinking maybe
the clutch gap needs adjustment.  I can't find anything in the Bentley
about this.  Has anyone done this and/or can steer me to some info on
how to do this?
