previous thread: Subject: 5000 window regulator fix w/ bicycle cable?
After discussing the window regulater fixes with other listers, I was
feeling smug about defeating the Audi Gods. Bad idea!
I went on a road trip yesterday . . . . 90 miles from home . . .a bunch of
red warning lights go on. I pull over and check the alt belt . .its ok.
Car has no gauges except for fuel and coolant temp. But I've had similar
problem before when alt belt broke and I remembered the symptoms.
Hmmmm, must be the regulator . . nothing I can do about that. Turned around
and went home. I shut off all electrical drains in the car and prayed that I
would make it home..
After an hour and 60 miles down the road, I pulled into a gas station and
put the battery on a charger and let it charge for an hour - - $10. Resumed
trip home . .arrived with no problems.
Rolled up the window . .. nothing happening . .but I hear the regulator
motor working. %#$&$#@@ !!!!
Today, I removed the alternator regulator and put in a spare that I had.
That fixed the problem. Put the original one back in . .and that works ok
also!!! Maybe its a bad contact or bad ground? The brushes on the one that
failed look fine . .almost as long as the brushes on a new regulator that I
picked up today.
Took out the drivers side window regulator.
The window slide cable attachment point broke, center crimp fell out of
slider, cable going up and down but not the slider.
Ahhhhhh . .but I figured out how to solve this type of problem before when I
was experimenting with window regulators.
1st you need to remove one pulley so you can remove the slider. My web site
covers this > www.geocities.com/syljay47
Then you need to epoxy the cable crimp into the slider. Attach a rubber band
to hold crimp tightly in place.
After epoxy sets up overnight, drill holes on each side of the cable crimp
for a press fit for small finishing nails. Tap the nails in with a hammer.
The finishing nails are cut to length with a dremel cut off wheel. These
'studs" retain the crimp in place . . .you need something to replace the
original crimping metal that broke off the slider.
Another application of epoxy to lock the studs to cable crimp and both to
cable slider. Let dry overnight.
Reassemble slider to track, install pulley (drilled and tapped for screw),
install regulator in door.
Several months ago, I took a bunch of pix of this type of repair. But, I
dont have space on the server for all the high resolution pix. Give me a
couple of days and I'll set up another web site to show how this repair is
done. Nothing demonstrates a procedure as well as photos.
Went to church and lit 5 candles in order to placate the Audi gods . .
.hoping they leave me the hell alone!
